When did you receive a SEED Grant and how has it impacted your business?

In the Fall of 2024, Black Tea Bookshop received the SEED Grant. I used the funds to purchase a laptop, which has helped my business tremendously by allowing us to place book orders, connect with other booksellers and interface with customers effectively and efficiently. Since winning the award, our social media following has increased exponentially, enabling us to get more stories of Black joy and resilience out into the hands of the people.

Candace Hulsizer

Owner of Black Tea Bookshop

Hello! I am Candace Hulsizer, the proud founder and owner of Black Tea Bookshop. We are a community-focused, mission-driven bookstore uniquely curated to celebrate the joys of Black life through the work of Black authors and illustrators. Get excited, ya’ll!! Black Tea Bookshop was born from a little girl’s dream. As a child growing up in St. Louis, I practically lived in the library. I loved to read but seldom saw myself positively represented in the books I was taking home. As a mom of two girls and an educator, it grew increasingly important to me that other Black and brown girls and boys - all children, for that matter - had a richer literary experience than I did.

Our goal is to add diverse perspectives to the already thriving literary scene in Columbia and beyond. Black Tea Bookshop is a love letter to our community. Our collection provides an intentional selection of books that serve three purposes: mirrors to see oneself, windows to see others and sliding glass doors that allow readers to step into a world different from their own. We offer a broad selection of books for people of all ages. From travel, nature and cooking to science-fiction, romance and thrillers, there’s something for everyone!

Currently located inside of The Shops at Sharp End, we can also be found at various pop-ups and local markets.

What does being nominated for our WBE of the Year award mean to you?

A nomination for ANYTHING associated with the Whitt family is an honor and a blessing. I know the work of James and Annelle Whitt, their commitment to our community and the level at which they have served. I have attended numerous workshops through the JAWED Foundation where I learned a great deal from Ms. Annelle about what it takes to run a successful, sustainable business. To receive this distinction from such an influential organization, one that exists to “empower women and minority businesses to grow, thrive and lead” is a source of encouragement and pride. Thank you!!
